Introduction A borehole may appear complete the moment the drilling rig reaches its planned depth and the final core barrel is retrieved. Drill rods are pulled from the hole, core boxes are transported for geological logging, and from the surface, the operation seems to have reached its conclusion. In reality, one of the most critical engineering stages is only beginning. Recovering a continuous sequence of diamond core provides invaluable information about the geology beneath the surface, but the core alone cannot answer one fundamental question: Where exactly did each rock sample come from?
