The final drill rods have been withdrawn, the diamond core has been carefully placed into labelled core boxes, and the sound of the drilling rig gradually fades into silence. To many, this marks the end of another successful borehole. To an exploration geologist, however, the most important phase of the entire drilling program is only beginning. Lined up inside the core box are cylinders of rock recovered from hundreds of meters beneath the Earth's surface. At first glance, they appear to be nothing more than broken pieces of stone arranged in sequence. Yet hidden within these rocks is a geological record that may span hundreds of millions of years—a record of volcanic eruptions, sediment deposition, tectonic deformation, hydrothermal alteration, mineralizing events, and the countless geological processes that shaped the Earth's crust long before humans ever existed.
